Furze Field

Walking into Furze Field near Petworth, you're struck by how quickly the world goes quiet. This Sussex forest is the sort of place where you actually hear the trees - rustling, creaking, the occasional bird call breaking through. It's not vast, so don't expect hours of getting properly lost, but that's rather the point. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, proper spongy with leaf litter and moss, and the paths are well-trodden enough that you won't need a map.

It's a family-friendly spot, though younger kids might get restless after forty minutes or so unless they're the type to stop and turn over logs looking for creatures. Walkers and nature enthusiasts will find it genuinely worthwhile - the mixed woodland has real character, with plenty of shade even in summer. The nearest town is Petworth, which means you're within easy striking distance of the South Downs if you want something more ambitious.

If you're based at Wakestone & Wild Glamping just down the road (4.1 miles away), this makes a brilliant half-morning wander before breakfast or a late-afternoon poodle. It's free, naturally, and you can do it in an hour without hurrying. Avoid mid-summer weekends when the local dog walkers descend en masse. Spring's genuinely lovely here - the forest floor comes alive with bluebells, which alone makes the trip worth your while.
