Fussells Iron Works (ruins)

The remains of Fussells Iron Works sprawl across a corner of Somerset near Mells like an industrial graveyard - all crumbling brick, rusted metalwork, and half-buried foundations that speak to a time when this valley hummed with furnaces and hammers. What you're looking at is the skeleton of a 19th-century ironworks that once produced everything from rails to agricultural equipment. The site isn't manicured or particularly signposted, which actually works in its favour. You get to wander through genuine ruins rather than a heritage theme park version of history.

This one's genuinely good for walking types and industrial history enthusiasts. Kids might find it atmospheric for twenty minutes, but there's not much interactive about it - no interpretive panels, no reconstructions, just the physical evidence of what was built here and left behind. Allow an hour to properly poke around, though you could cover it in half that if you're not into the detail.

It's free, which is the only sensible price for what amounts to a field of stones. The best time is late afternoon when the light's decent for photographs and fewer people are about. Given its proximity to Glamping on the Hill and Hidden Wood Glamping, both five-star spots, this makes for a solid half-day excursion from a glamping base. It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity over schedule - the kind of detour that proper justifies a weekend in the Somerset countryside.
