Gairloch Beach (Hotel)

The beach at Gairloch curves round in a proper arc of golden sand, backed by heather and low hills that catch the light differently depending on the time of day. You get a real sense of the Scottish west coast here - wild, spacious, and not packed with people even in summer. The water's cold, obviously, but swimmers do go in. Most visitors just walk the length of the strand, collect shells, or sit on the rocks with a coffee and watch the light shift across the sea.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a quick stop. The beach itself is free and always accessible. Plan a good hour or two if you're bringing kids - they'll wade, skip stones, and chase the sandhoppers along the shoreline. Adults after a bit of breathing space will find it restorative without needing to do much of anything.

The beach ties in nicely with a caravan or camping break in the area. Sands Caravan & Camping sits just 3 miles away and offers a proper base for exploring this corner of the Highlands. From Gairloch itself you've got shops and a pub or two, so you're not entirely cut off. The beach works best on clearer days when you can actually see the mountains across the water. Winter's brutal here, so plan for May through September if you want anything resembling a pleasant dip.
