Gairloch beach view

The view from Gairloch beach stops you dead. You're standing on the shore looking out across the bay with the mountains rising up behind you - proper Highland scenery. The beach itself is a long sweep of sand and shingle that changes mood depending on the light. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey one, which is often, it's moody and dramatic in the way only the west coast can be.

This is a spot for walkers and photographers mainly. You won't need more than an hour unless you're the sit-and-stare type, which plenty of people are. The village of Gairloch itself is just behind the beach - there's a pier, a few shops, and a couple of cafes if you need sustenance. Families will find it pleasant enough for a beach walk, though the water's cold and the beach isn't the golden-sand Mediterranean sort that holds children's attention for hours.

The real draw is the raw landscape. It works best outside peak summer when the midges aren't quite so vicious and you've got breathing room. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms it entirely. There's no formal admission or entry fee - you just park up and go down to the shore.

If you're basing yourself at Sands Caravan & Camping just down the road, this becomes part of the bigger picture. It's one of several decent walks and viewpoints in the area, worth combining with a drive to Loch Torridon or a visit to the old lighthouse at Rubha Reidh. Good enough for a half-day outing if the weather's playing ball.
