Game keepers house (ruin)

The Game Keepers House sits as a crumbling brick skeleton on the Essex marshes east of Tilbury, a proper ghost of Victorian estate management that most people drive straight past. What remains is essentially four walls and a lot of empty sky - no roof, no interior fixtures, just the raw bones of what was once someone's actual home. It's the kind of place that appeals to ruins enthusiasts and industrial archaeologists rather than casual day-trippers; you'll spend maybe twenty minutes here, tops, unless you're the type to sit and sketch or photograph the decay from every angle.

The real draw is working out who lived here and why. This was a gamekeeper's residence, which means someone spent their days protecting game birds and deer for whatever grand estate owned the land. The brick is weathered soft and the windows are empty, which makes for moody photographs if you're into that sort of thing. History buffs will find it worth a brief detour, but families with young kids will lose interest fast - there's nothing interactive, no interpretation boards, and the surrounding marshland can get boggy depending on the season.

It's free to visit and accessible on foot, though you'll need to find it among the flatlands. Badgells Wood Camping and Thamesview Camping are both within striking distance if you're basing yourself locally. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and fewer people are about. It won't take up much of your park holiday, but as a quick archaeological wander between other Essex attractions, it works.
