Shades house

The Thames sprawls out below Shades House like a grey-brown ribbon, and on a clear day you can trace its curves all the way towards London. It's a proper vantage point - the kind of spot where you understand why this stretch of the river mattered so much historically, with ships and trade routes and all that serious business.

You're looking down at Tilbury from up here, which gives the whole industrial landscape a different character than when you're stuck in it at road level. The viewing area itself is straightforward - no fancy installations or paid entry that I'm aware of, just a spot where you can stand and look. Bring binoculars if you're into spotting boats; the shipping traffic is constant enough to keep that kind of thing interesting.

It's the sort of place that works best if you're already in the area rather than a dedicated journey. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on the ground for more than twenty minutes, unless they're genuinely fascinated by river traffic and industrial ports. Walker types will appreciate it as part of a longer route rather than a destination in itself.

Thamesview Camping sits just down the road - under five miles - so if you're based there for a park holiday, this makes sense as a morning or late-afternoon wander. The view isn't flashy, but it's real and occasionally quite moving when the light's right. Worth the short detour if you're staying locally.
