Garn Fadryn

Garn Fadryn rises sharply from the countryside near Pwllheli, a proper standalone peak that catches your eye long before you reach it. It's not a massive mountain - around 600 metres - but it commands attention, with Iron Age hillfort remains scattered across the summit that speak to centuries of human activity on this bit of Gwynedd. The walk up takes roughly an hour from the base, and the gradient is genuine; this isn't a gentle stroll. What you get for the effort is a 360-degree view across the Llyn Peninsula and out towards the coast, which on a clear day beats most things you'll find in North Wales.

You'll want proper boots and decent weather for this one. It's free to access, naturally - there's no gatehouse or visitor centre, just you and the hillside. Walkers and history buffs will get the most from it; families with young kids might find the steep stretch near the top a bit much, though confident six-year-olds upwards should manage fine. Allow a good two hours if you're taking photos and soaking in the views.

If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Tal-y-Fan, Treheli Farm, or Tyn Ddol are all within 5 miles - Garn Fadryn makes a cracking half-day adventure. It's close enough for a morning visit without eating your entire holiday, but substantial enough that you won't feel cheated by the drive. The Pwllheli area has plenty of coastal walking too, so this pairs well with beach days.
