Pen-y-gaer

Standing at 325 metres, this rounded hill offers sweeping views across the Llŷn Peninsula without the crowds that flock to Snowdonia's bigger peaks. The walk up from the nearest parking spot takes about 45 minutes on a clear path, though it gets a bit boggy after rain.

From the summit, you'll see right across to Cardigan Bay on a decent day, with Pwllheli spread out below and the coast stretching towards Abersoch. It's not dramatic - no knife-edge ridges or towering crags - but there's something properly satisfying about having this viewpoint largely to yourself.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from it. The route's straightforward enough for anyone reasonably fit, though I wouldn't fancy it with a pushchair. Allow two hours return including time at the top for a proper look around.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Tal-y-Fan Holiday Park or Gyrn Ddu Campsite, it makes for a decent morning's exercise before hitting the beach. The hill works well as part of exploring this quieter corner of the peninsula - less touristy than the coast but with equally rewarding views once you've put in the effort.
