Garsdon Wood

The woodland around Garsdon, just outside Malmesbury, is proper walking territory. Ancient broadleaf trees, paths that actually go somewhere, and the sort of quiet you don't get near towns. It's the kind of place where you'll stumble onto a stream you weren't expecting and suddenly lose an hour just poking about.

This isn't a visitor centre with a café - it's genuine woodland, so come prepared. Good boots matter. Spring is wonderful here, with bluebells doing their thing between the trees, and autumn turns the canopy into something properly golden. Summer's lovely too, though it gets a bit thicker underfoot. Winter you can actually see through to the bracken and fallen logs.

Walkers will get the most from Garsdon Wood. It's the kind of place to spend a solid two to three hours, though you can do a quick loop in under an hour if you're short on time. Families with younger kids might find it a bit exposed if little ones tire easily - there's not much shelter once you're in, and paths can be muddy. Keen naturalists love it here; the bird life is decent and you'll spot deer if you're patient and quiet.

Based near Malmesbury, you're well placed to make this a morning walk before heading elsewhere. The glamping at Whychurch Farm is only two miles away, and Burton Hill Caravan Park is barely further - both proper spots to settle into for a few days. Garsdon slots nicely into a forest-and-market-town kind of break.
