Gilbert's Monument

This granite obelisk stands on Bodmin Moor like a Victorian finger pointing at the sky, built to honour Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert in 1864. You're looking at roughly 23 metres of granite that the locals apparently thought worth hauling up here to commemorate a notable who didn't quite change the world, but tried hard enough.

The real appeal isn't the monument itself, if I'm honest. It's the location that makes the trip worthwhile. You get proper moorland views on approach, and the walk itself - somewhere around 20 minutes from the nearest carpark - is the sort of thing that clears your head. The monument sits exposed on open ground, so wind is often a factor. Bring a jacket.

History buffs will have some interest given Gilbert's connections to Cornwall's mining heritage, though the site is fairly sparse on interpretation. Kids might enjoy the walk if they're into outdoor pursuits, but they won't linger long at the actual monument. Free to visit as far as I can tell, with no obvious entrance fees or opening hours restrictions.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Mena Farm or Camp De Lank are both within six miles - this works as a morning outing on a clear day. Pair it with a Bodmin town visit for supplies, or explore more of the moor while you're out that way. Don't make it your main event, but worth an hour if the weather plays ball.
