Gill Wood

A proper forest walk rather than a manicured tourist spot, Gill Wood sits just outside Haywards Heath and gives you the real Sussex woodland experience. Think dense tree cover, decent footpaths that actually go somewhere, and the kind of quiet you don't get near towns. The woodland floor is carpeted in ferns and moss, especially after rain, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth timing a visit for.

It's ideal for walkers who want something substantial without needing to trek to the South Downs. An hour and a half will get you round the main paths comfortably, though you can easily spend longer picking your way through the quieter sections. Families with kids aged seven upwards will find it engaging - there's enough going on underfoot to keep them interested, though it's not a playground.

The big plus is proximity to Wild Boar Wood Campsite just two miles away, making this a natural half-day excursion if you're based there. It's the kind of walk that clears your head without requiring a massive time commitment, and you won't be battling crowds even on decent weekends.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - no cafes or car park amenities. Bring a decent map or download the walk beforehand. Winter and spring are your best bets weather-wise; summer can feel a bit airless under the thick canopy.
