Gillbarrow Plantation

A proper forest walk rather than a manicured attraction, Gillbarrow Plantation sits a few miles south of Carlisle and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a Cumbrian woodland - tall conifers, quiet paths, and the kind of silence that makes you realise how little you get of it at home. The plantation is commercial forestry through and through, so don't expect visitor facilities or information boards. What you get instead is access to a genuine working forest where you can walk among the trees without the crowds.

It's ideal for families with older kids or anyone after a straightforward woodland ramble. Younger children might find it a touch monotonous - the trees are densely packed, the terrain is fairly uniform, and there's not much variation in scenery. Walkers and photographers will find it more rewarding, particularly if you're after moody forest shots or just need to burn off some energy away from main roads.

Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a reasonable loop. The paths are generally dry underfoot but can get muddy after rain. Go early morning for the best light and fewest other people. There's no charge for entry and no facilities to speak of, so bring your own supplies.
