Glas-bheinn Mhòr

The walk up Glas-bheinn Mhòr is properly rewarding, especially if you're based at one of the Loch Ness holiday parks just a few miles south. It's not a Munro - sits just under 3,000 feet - but that actually works in its favour. You get proper Highland views without the full mountaineering palaver, and the approach from near Inverness is straightforward enough for fit walkers who aren't necessarily peak-baggers.

The route takes you through moorland and up to open hillside with big vistas across Strathglass and beyond. On a clear day - and you'll want one - it's the kind of walk that reminds you why people get obsessed with the Highlands. Takes roughly four hours there and back depending on your pace, so it's a decent half-day endeavour rather than a full commitment.

Families with older children who are confident on rough ground will manage this fine. Younger kids might find the unrelenting uphill a bit grim, and there's nothing at the summit except the view, so don't expect a café or visitor centre. That's partly the appeal, mind you.

There's no visitor infrastructure - no admission fee, no facilities, no crowds. You'll need proper walking boots and should check the weather before heading out, as Scottish hills can turn foul quickly. If you're camping nearby at Loch Ness Shores or one of the other parks, this makes a cracking addition to a week's worth of activities rather than a destination in itself.
