Invermoriston Stone Circle

A handful of weathered stones standing in moorland near Inverness, this Bronze Age circle doesn't grab you the way Callanish does on the Isle of Lewis. But that's partly the point. You'll likely have the place to yourself, which beats fighting crowds at more famous sites by miles.

The stones themselves are modest - the tallest reaches maybe waist height - and the circle's incomplete. What matters is the sense of space around them. There's something about standing where Bronze Age people stood four thousand years ago that makes the hype feel irrelevant. The views across the surrounding moorland are decent enough, though Highland mist can swallow the whole thing without warning.

Walkers will get more from this than casual visitors. Allow thirty minutes if you're passing through, longer if you want to sit and absorb the atmosphere. There's no visitor centre, no tea shop, no interpretation boards - just the stones and the landscape. It's free, accessible year-round, and rarely busy.

From Inverness town centre it's straightforward to reach. If you're camping at Loch Ness Holiday Park or Inver Coille, both within walking distance, you could easily combine a morning here with a Loch Ness walk or a poke around nearby villages. It won't consume your holiday, but it's the kind of stop that sticks with you longer than somewhere more polished. Worth twenty minutes of your time, no more, no less.
