Glasson Moss Nature Reserve

The moss stretches out flat and vast, hemmed in by trees that feel almost too distant to be real. Glasson Moss, just outside Wigton, is a working peatland and nature reserve - the kind of place that stops you dead if you're expecting something obviously beautiful. It's not dramatic. It's not Instagram-friendly. What it is, though, is genuinely wild in a way the Lake District's showier bits aren't.

You walk a network of boardwalks across the bog, dipping through different habitats. In spring and summer the plants are extraordinary - sundews, sphagnum moss in mad colours, bog asphodel. Birdwatchers come here regularly and serious botanists treat it like a pilgrimage. The silence is total except for the occasional crane or woodpecker. On a grey day it's properly moody.

It's free and you can wander for as little as twenty minutes or two hours - the paths loop and connect. Best visited between April and August when the wildlife's active and your feet won't sink quite so dramatically. Winter's miserable unless you've got proper waterproofs. Families with young kids sometimes find it a bit samey, but teenage nature nerds will be in their element.

If you're staying at Glendale Holiday Park nearby, this is the sort of morning walk that makes a proper day of it - especially if you combine it with a decent pub lunch back in Wigton. It's proper Cumbrian landscape, unglamorous and honest.
