Golden Acre Park

Golden Acre Park sits just north of Leeds and delivers exactly what it promises - a proper woodland walk with a lake at its heart. The reserve sprawls across 60 acres of mixed woodland, grassland and water, making it ideal if you want to stretch your legs without venturing too far from the city.

You'll find good walking trails that loop around the lake, with enough variation to keep things interesting. The water itself attracts waterfowl and wading birds, so bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching. The paths are mostly well-maintained and suit families with kids - nothing too challenging, though some sections can get muddy after rain.

This works particularly well if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like St Helena's or Fairmead Farm Glamping. It's close enough for a morning outing without eating into your whole day, yet substantial enough that you won't feel you've wasted the trip. Walkers will appreciate the peace - it doesn't get rammed like some Yorkshire beauty spots.

Allow roughly two hours for a leisurely circuit, longer if you're stopping to watch birds or sketch. Spring brings bluebells and migrant species, while autumn colours reflect nicely in the lake. There's no admission charge, which is a genuine bonus. The main caveat is that it's fairly exposed in places, so wind can make it feel less pleasant than it looks on a grey Yorkshire day.
