Golding Rough

The woodland at Golding Rough, just outside Shrewsbury, is proper walking country - the sort of place where you can lose a couple of hours without thinking about it. Oak and beech dominate, with enough undergrowth to make you feel genuinely away from things, even though you're only minutes from the town.

It's ideal for families who want their kids to actually move around rather than stand still looking at something. The paths are manageable, muddy in winter, and there's enough space to let them run ahead without panic. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. History types won't find much - there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards - but that's partly the appeal. You get woodland as it is, not as someone's decided to package it.

Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you want to see most of it without rushing. Go in spring for bluebells, autumn for colour, or honestly any time except after heavy rain when it turns into a bog. Free to access as far as I can tell, and there's no entrance fee or visitor amenities to worry about.

If you're staying at Mill Farm Holiday Park or Lower Hill Campsite - both excellent bases, incidentally - this works perfectly as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's not a full day's destination on its own, but combined with a walk around Shrewsbury itself or a quick visit to the countryside nearby, it slots in nicely. Real woodland, proper walking, no fuss.
