Longdole Coppice

The woodland around Longdole Coppice, just outside Shrewsbury, is proper walking territory - the kind of place you go when you want to leave the town behind without driving for hours. It's mixed forest: mature broadleaf trees, conifer plantations, and enough open paths to make navigation straightforward without needing a map. The coppice itself is managed woodland, which means you'll see evidence of traditional forestry work - coppiced hazel, cleared sections coming back into growth, the kind of thing that shows this land is actively looked after rather than left to run wild.

Walkers will get the most out of it. There's enough space to do a proper loop without getting bored, and the ground is generally sound underfoot even after rain. It's not dramatic - you won't get views that make you gasp - but it's exactly what you need if you're camped at one of the nearby parks like Love2Stay or Condover Park and want to stretch your legs without faffing about. An hour and a half covers the main trails comfortably, or you can wander longer if you're in no rush.

Children will tolerate it for a bit, but they're unlikely to be captivated for hours on end unless they're the type who enjoy hunting for wildlife or building things from sticks. It works well combined with other stops around Shrewsbury - the town itself has proper attractions if the weather turns grim. Free access, no facilities that I could find, so bring your own water and pick a decent morning rather than heading out in driving rain.
