Goodabrook Wood

Deep in the woods just north of Plymouth, Goodabrook Wood is exactly what you need if the beach crowds are doing your head in. It's a proper woodland walk through Devon's quieter side - dense trees, forest floor that crunches underfoot, and the kind of green that makes you remember why you came southwest in the first place.

What you actually get is a few miles of well-trodden paths through native woodland. Nothing fancy, no visitor centre or gift shop nonsense. Just trees, air, and the occasional sound of a stream. The canopy's thick enough that even on hot days it stays cool. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how much you're actually looking at things versus just trudging through.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's a solid leg-stretcher without being taxing. Families with young kids might find an hour is their limit before someone needs a snack and a complaint. History buffs won't find much here except the woodland itself, which has probably looked like this for centuries.

Free entry, no faffing about with opening hours or tickets. The best time is autumn when the light filters through properly, though it's decent year-round. Not life-changing, but it's real woodland close to Plymouth, and that alone makes it worth the drive.
