Gorn Hill

Standing at 479 metres, this modest summit near Llanidloes won't challenge serious fell walkers but offers proper rewards for the effort involved. The climb takes about 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following well-trodden sheep tracks through typical Mid Wales moorland - bracken, heather and the odd rowan tree clinging to rocky outcrops.

What makes Gorn Hill worth the trudge is the view from the top. On a clear day you'll see across to Plynlimon and the Cambrian Mountains, with the Severn Valley spread out below like a green patchwork quilt. It's particularly lovely in late afternoon when the light catches the reservoir waters.

Families with older children will manage fine, though little ones might find the final scramble a bit much. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are essential. There's no obvious path marked, which adds to the adventure but means you need reasonable map-reading skills.
