Vaenor Park

The Afon Clywedog cuts through Vaenor Park like the park's spine, and walking the reserve near Llanidloes feels properly remote despite being minutes from civilisation. This is a working nature reserve where you're likely to spot red kites circling overhead - they're common enough here that locals barely look up anymore.

It's essentially a walk along woodland and riverside, nothing fancy. The paths wind through mixed woodland with the river doing most of the visual heavy lifting. In spring the whole place is green chaos; by autumn it's golden and quiet. You won't find visitor facilities or a car park with facilities - this is a raw, un-packaged corner of Powys where nature reserve means exactly that.

Walkers will find it worthwhile, especially those doing longer loops combining nearby stretches of the Clywedog valley. Bird enthusiasts come for the raptors. Families with young kids might find it a bit thin - there's not much to do beyond walk and look. Allow an hour or two depending on which paths you take.
