Gortin Glen Forest Park

The forest loop at Gortin Glen is a proper drive through ancient woodland that feels like you've stumbled into somewhere the modern world forgot. Seven kilometres of scenic road winds through thick stands of spruce and larch, with pull-offs for short walks and a visitor centre that doubles as a decent café. It's peaceful rather than dramatic - don't expect mountain vistas or crashing waterfalls, but instead the kind of quiet that makes you actually remember why you came to Northern Ireland in the first place.

Walkers get the most from this. There's a gentle half-hour loop trail that takes in the native woodland, and if you're feeling keener, longer paths snake deeper into the forest. Kids will enjoy the novelty of the scenic drive itself - something about being in the car feels like an adventure when trees are towering overhead. The visitor centre has basic exhibits on forestry and local wildlife, though it won't hold anyone's attention for more than thirty minutes.

Free to wander the grounds, though there's a small fee for the scenic drive if you want to take your car through. Allow a couple of hours if you're walking, less if you're just doing the drive-through and a quick café stop. Omagh is only a few miles south if you need shops or petrol. The nearby Gortin Glen Glamping site makes sense if you want to stay local - you're literally on the forest's doorstep. It's worth the detour on a wet afternoon when you want something quiet rather than touristy, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip.
