Gosfield Lake

The water here is surprisingly clear on a decent day - you'd think Essex lakes would be murky, but Gosfield Lake actually delivers proper views. It's a 200-acre expanse just outside Halstead, formed back in the 1980s from gravel extraction, which sounds industrial until you realise the wildlife has completely reclaimed it. Anglers dominate weekdays, but the walking paths around the perimeter are genuinely lovely, especially the eastern shore where trees create some shelter from the wind.

You can walk the full loop in about an hour if you're not stopping, though most people potter about for longer. The lake itself is the draw - sailing club activity on weekends, plenty of birdwatching spots, and it's the sort of place where you can actually sit and do nothing without feeling you're wasting time. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on attractions (there's no beach, no playground), but older children and anyone after a straightforward walk will be fine. The whole area is reasonably quiet, which is either refreshing or boring depending on your outlook.

Gosfield Lake Resort sits practically on top of it - that's your most convenient base if you're planning to stay nearby. Hill Farm and Stocks Farm are within five miles, so you've got options. Free to walk around, though fishing requires membership. Go early on weekends to avoid the fishing crews, and bring binoculars if you're into birds. Nothing fancy, but it's proper Essex countryside without the pretence.
