Market towns don't get much more authentic than this corner of north Essex, where medieval streets wind down to the River Colne and antique shops still outnumber chain stores. Halstead proper feels refreshingly unspoilt - Thursday market day brings proper bustle, but midweek you'll find locals chatting outside independent cafes rather than queuing at Costa.

The real draw here is the surrounding countryside. Gosfield Lake stretches out just beyond town, a cracking spot for water sports or simply watching the sailing dinghies drift by on summer afternoons. Several ancient woodlands dot the area - Moat Wood and Lower Wood offer lovely walking through oak and hornbeam, while Rayne Hatch Wood has some decent mountain bike trails if you're feeling energetic.

For a proper pint, the Courtyard Brewery does excellent ales right in town, though beer enthusiasts should also seek out Shalford Brewery a few miles south. The Annual Fireworks Spectacular brings half of Essex here each November - book accommodation well ahead if you're planning to visit then.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. Cressing station connects to London Liverpool Street via Braintree, while the A131 runs straight through if you're driving. Colchester sits 20 minutes south for bigger shops and restaurants.

Staying at one of the local parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for supplies or a pub lunch, yet surrounded by that proper Essex countryside - rolling fields, ancient hedgerows, and footpaths that actually lead somewhere interesting.
