Gossmore Recreation Ground

A strip of woodland and meadow running alongside the Thames near Marlow, Gossmore Recreation Ground is the sort of place locals know and tourists miss. It's not dramatic - no ancient monuments or spectacular vistas - but it's proper good for a quiet walk if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots or caravan parks dotted around Hurley and Henley.

The ground itself is modest: a few acres of mixed habitat with trees lining the water's edge and open grassland that floods naturally in winter. You'll see kingfishers if you're lucky and patient, plus the usual suspects - mallards, herons, the occasional heron looking thoroughly unimpressed by your presence. The paths are straightforward, nothing demanding, and it connects nicely to the broader walking network along this stretch of the Thames.

Walkers get the most from it, especially anyone combining it with a longer towpath ramble towards Henley or upstream. It's free, obviously, and you can spend anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour here depending on whether you're just passing through or actually stopping to watch the water. If you're with kids who need constant stimulation, they'll get bored. But if they're the type who like spotting birds and paddling in shallows, it works.

Given how many holiday parks sit within a couple of miles - Hurley Riverside and the bell tents at Rent Bell Tents are practically on the doorstep - this makes a decent morning sortie before heading to Marlow for lunch. It's the kind of place that justifies a week in the area rather than stealing the show itself.
