Gourock Esplanade

The waterfront at Gourock runs for a good stretch along the Clyde, and the esplanade is where locals actually spend their time rather than just passing through. It's a proper seaside promenade with that slightly worn-in feel of a place that's been welcoming visitors for decades.

You get decent views across the water towards the Cowal Peninsula, and on a clear day it's worth stopping for. There's a beach of sorts - not golden sand, but functional - and enough space to walk without feeling hemmed in by crowds. The pier's been refurbished in recent years and gives you a different perspective if you fancy a stroll out. Families tend to do okay here; kids can burn off energy on the foreshore, though don't expect theme park levels of entertainment.

The real draw is combining it with a wider Clyde coast wander. Gourock works best as part of a day exploring Helensburgh and the surrounding area rather than as a standalone destination. If you're staying at Hunters Quay Holiday Village just down the road, it's absolutely worth the short drive for an afternoon on the water.

Go when the weather's decent - grey and drizzly, it feels a bit melancholy. Summer weekends get busier but the esplanade's wide enough to absorb it. Allow an hour or two depending on how long you want to linger. It's free, naturally, and there are cafes nearby if you need refreshment without having to trek far.
