Gravelhill Wood

Walk into Gravelhill Wood and you're immediately surrounded by proper woodland - the kind of Essex forest that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a quiet wander. It's a straightforward place: wooded trails cutting through dense trees, relatively flat going, and the sort of spot where you can actually hear yourself think without the sound of a car park three metres away.

This works best for people who want a genuine nature walk rather than a themed experience. Family groups with kids aged seven or up will manage it fine - nothing too strenuous, and there's enough to spot (birds, insects, the occasional deer if you're lucky) to keep them engaged for an hour or so. Older walkers and anyone just needing to clear their head will find it genuinely peaceful.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that we could pin down, so come prepared: bring water, wear decent boots if it's been wet, and go early if you want to avoid the afternoon crowd. It's free to access, which is the way woodland should be.

If you're camping at Barleylands Campsite or Thamesview Camping nearby Billericay, Gravelhill Wood is a straightforward addition to your itinerary - close enough for a morning outing, far enough that it feels like a proper escape. Don't expect manicured paths or signage at every turn. What you get instead is genuine Essex woodland, quiet and unpretentious.
