Great Coppice

The New Forest doesn't feel properly explored until you've wandered through Great Coppice, a proper bit of working woodland that actually shows you what the Forest is - not just pretty glades but a living, managed landscape. This isn't a manicured visitor attraction; it's a working forest where you can see coppiced hazel and oak doing what they've done here for centuries.

Walking through feels different from the open heathland elsewhere in the Forest. The canopy closes in, light filters through in strips, and you get that smell of damp woodland and leaf mould that tells you something real is happening here. The paths wind through properly, and in spring the bluebells are genuinely worth timing a visit for - not Instagram-famous, but thick enough to make you stop.

Historyfolk will appreciate that you're walking through a forest management system that hasn't fundamentally changed since medieval times. For families, it's good solid walking without being demanding, though younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour. It's free, naturally, being part of the New Forest, and there's no set time commitment - wander for twenty minutes or three hours depending on what you fancy.
