Great Hanger

A proper beech wood that sprawls across the Hampshire downs just outside Petersfield, Great Hanger feels like the sort of place locals have known about for years while visitors completely miss it. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, and in spring the whole thing's carpeted with bluebells - genuinely worth timing a visit around if you can.

There's no visitor centre or café here, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on how you feel about facilities. What you get instead is peaceful walking through tall trees, with paths that range from easy strolls to proper climbs up the slope. On a clear day you catch views across the South Downs, which makes the huffing worthwhile.

History types will appreciate that this has been working woodland for centuries - you can spot coppiced trees and old boundaries if you know what to look for. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before the novelty wears off, but serious walkers could happily spend half a day here linking it with other routes across the downs.

It's completely free and open year-round, though mud can be genuine after rain. If you're staying at Adhurst Yurts just down the road - brilliant spot, that - or Cedar Valley, Great Hanger makes a logical morning out before heading back for lunch. Not Instagram-famous, not crowded, and that's exactly why it's worth the detour.
