Great Oath Hill

The walk up Great Oath Hill rewards you with proper views across Morecambe Bay and the fells beyond - it's one of those Cumbrian peaks that punches well above its weight for effort required. Starting from near Grange-over-Sands, the ascent is steep but mercifully short, taking around an hour to the top depending on fitness. On a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District hills, which makes the whole thing feel less like a slog and more like a genuine expedition.

It's the kind of walk that suits families who want a genuine mountain experience without committing to a full fell day out. Older kids will feel properly accomplished reaching the summit; younger ones might find the steeper sections tough going. The path can be boggy in places and there's no facilities up top, so bring water and waterproof trousers if the weather looks dodgy.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Old Park Wood is less than two miles away, or Haven Lakeland Leisure Park a bit further off - this makes an excellent half-day adventure. It's particularly good in spring when the lower slopes are fresh and green, or autumn when the visibility tends to be sharper. Winter can be treacherous underfoot, so unless you're confident in wet conditions, leave it for better months. Free to walk, naturally, and there's parking available near the trailhead.
