About How Barrow

The walk up How Barrow rewards you with proper views across Morecambe Bay - the kind that make the climb worthwhile on a clear day. It's a modest peak by Lake District standards, but don't let that fool you. The summit sits just outside Grange-over-Sands, making it ideal for a half-day outing without committing to a full mountain expedition.

You're looking at roughly an hour's walk from the road, gaining around 350 metres. The path winds through woodland before opening onto fell with genuine vistas across the bay towards the Furness Peninsula. On a grey afternoon we found it quiet - which is precisely the point. No crowds, no gift shops, just decent countryside within spitting distance of the town.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections and the exposed stretches on top. There's nothing technical about it, but it's not a gentle stroll either. Take an hour to reach the summit, spend twenty minutes up there, then descend.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Old Park Wood is barely a mile away, Haven Lakeland sits at 3.2 miles - this makes an excellent morning walk before heading into Grange-over-Sands for lunch. The town itself has proper cafes worth stopping at. Weather dependent, absolutely. In mist it's dull. In sunshine it's genuinely lovely. Check conditions before you go.
