Great Rough

You'll find yourself walking into proper old-growth woodland the moment you step into Great Rough, just a few miles outside Lewes. Walkers get the most out of this one. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - there's no playground or visitor centre, just trees and paths. History buffs won't find much to grab onto either. But if you're after a proper forest walk without crowds, this delivers.

The nearest town of Lewes sits close enough that you can combine this with an afternoon exploring the high street or grabbing lunch. It's the kind of place that reminds you why the South Downs feel special rather than overdone.
