Great Tower Plantation

Dense woodland stretches across the hillside just south of Windermere, offering proper Lake District forest walking without the crowds that plague the more famous fells. Great Tower Plantation is exactly what it says on the tin - a working forestry plantation that doubles as a lovely spot for a ramble.

Winding paths thread through mixed conifers and deciduous trees, with occasional glimpses of the lake through the canopy. It's not spectacular walking, but it's peaceful and well-maintained. Families with younger children will find it manageable - the gradients are gentle and the paths are clear. Dog walkers seem to love it here.

The plantation sits conveniently close to several holiday parks around Windermere, making it an easy morning walk if you're staying at Park Cliffe or Hill of Oaks. You could easily combine it with a visit to Windermere town afterwards. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you venture - there are several routes of varying lengths.

Best avoided in high summer when the dense tree cover can feel a bit oppressive. Spring and autumn are lovely, particularly when the deciduous trees are putting on a show. It's free to wander, though parking might be limited depending on where you access it from the main roads.
