Great Trill Coppice

Walking into Great Trill Coppice feels like stepping back about two centuries. This Devon woodland, tucked inland from Bridport, is proper old-growth forest - the kind with proper ancient trees and enough moss on the trunks to write your name in. The paths wind through mixed woodland where you'll spot everything from oak and beech to the occasional birch, and on a quiet morning the birdsong actually makes you stop and listen.

It's not a manicured visitor experience. There are no marked trails, no café, no interpretation boards. What you get instead is genuine woodland - muddy in winter, humming with life in spring. The canopy creates these natural cathedral spaces that feel worlds away from the coast just a few miles south. Families with older kids who actually want to walk rather than be entertained will find it rewarding. History types should know this is coppice woodland, meaning it's been managed for centuries - that's why the structure looks the way it does.

Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're exploring properly, longer if you're moving slowly or stopping to watch wildlife. There's no visitor infrastructure that I can find, so bring what you need. Best visited after rain when the woodland smell is strongest, or in early morning when you'll have the place to yourself.

If you're staying at Seadown or Newlands Holiday Park down towards the coast, this makes a solid inland morning before heading back to the beach. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people still care about protecting old woodland.
