Green Island Fort

The remains of a Roman fort sit on what was once an island in the River Nith, just outside Dumfries. These days the Solway marshes have shifted and dried out, so you're walking across what looks like ordinary grassland to reach it - which somehow makes the whole thing feel more mysterious than if it were still surrounded by water.

Green Island Fort dates back to the first century AD, when the Romans were pushing north into Scotland. What you'll find is mostly earthworks now - ditches and ramparts that tell the story of occupation and abandonment. It's not dramatic stuff. There are no standing structures, no visitor centre, just the archaeology laid out in lumps and hollows across the field. Bring an imagination and decent footwear.

Walkers will get the most from this. The site itself takes 30 minutes to look around properly, but the Nith Valley walks around Dumfries are genuinely pleasant - rolling countryside, riverside paths, and genuinely quiet. History buffs wanting to understand Roman Scotland will find it worthwhile, though you'll need to do your homework beforehand because interpretation on site is minimal.

It's free and accessible year-round, though winter muddy stretches are no joke. Allow an hour total if you're combining it with a riverside walk. Staying at Brandedleys, barely half a mile away, makes this an easy morning sortie before heading into Dumfries proper or exploring the wider Galloway parks - Auchenfranco and Beeswing are both within easy striking distance for a longer caravan holiday.
