Sour Hill

The walk up Sour Hill from Dumfries is brief but rewards you with views across the Nith Valley that justify the effort. The summit sits just outside town, making it accessible from any of the caravan parks within striking distance, especially Brandedleys which is barely a mile away.

On a clear day you get proper vistas south towards the hills beyond, and on grey Scottish afternoons the mist rolling in has its own appeal. The terrain is straightforward moorland underfoot, nothing technical, which means families with older kids or anyone wanting a gentle climb without the commitment of a proper fell walk will find it worth their time. Expect to be up and down in ninety minutes, two hours maximum if you linger at the top.

There's no visitor facility or fee - just park sensibly and go. The nearest town of Dumfries sits right there, so you could combine this with grabbing lunch or browsing the shops on the way back. It's the sort of outing that works well when the weather looks changeable and you want something you can bail on without much notice. Not dramatic enough to be the highlight of a holiday, but honestly, if you're staying at one of the local parks and fancy a proper walk that doesn't involve hours in the car getting somewhere, this does the job nicely.
