Green Top

The walk up Green Top rewards you with views across the Galloway Hills that stretch for miles - proper expansive stuff. It's not a massive peak by Scottish standards, but that's partly why it works so well. The climb from Newton Stewart takes about an hour each way, and the path is well-trodden without being tedious.

You get proper panoramic views when you reach the top, and on a clear day you can pick out Merrick away to the southwest. The moorland setting feels wild enough without requiring technical scrambling or full mountaineering kit. Families with older kids (say, eight upwards) manage it fine, though younger ones might find the return journey a bit of a slog.

The real appeal here is combining it with a stay at one of the nearby parks. Three Lochs Holiday Park sits just 2.6 miles away, making this an ideal afternoon walk if the weather's on your side. If you're after something more upmarket, Barnharrow Holiday Pods (4.2 miles) offers a proper luxury base for exploring the area. Both let you use Green Top as one leg of a larger Galloway walking itinerary without needing to drive between peaks.

Allow three hours total including lingering time at the summit. Go in the morning - afternoon cloud creeps in quickly here. The path can get boggy after rain, so waterproofs matter more than you'd think for a modest hill.
