Green Wood

A proper working forest, not some manicured country estate - that's Green Wood near Royston. You're walking amongst actual timber management, with forestry going on in the background and paths that genuinely feel like they belong to someone working the land rather than a visitor attraction trying too hard.

The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric. Ancient-looking oaks sit alongside managed conifer plantations, which sounds at odds but somehow works. There are walking routes winding through, though they're not signposted like some places - you need to pay attention or bring a map. That said, it keeps the crowds down and makes it feel less polished, which is entirely the point.

Families with decent walkers will get the most from it. Young kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're into spotting wildlife or collecting interesting sticks. It's the kind of place where you either settle in for a proper two-hour ramble or you move on. No café, no facilities that I could find, so come prepared.

It fits well into a wider Essex outing - you're close enough to Royston for lunch, and if you're staying at Hidden Gem Glamping just down the road, this is genuinely a better bet than another tourist trail. Free to walk, naturally, and best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged. Winter's actually lovely here - low light filtering through bare branches, proper moody.
