Greenwich Meridian

There's a line drawn across the earth here, and you're standing on it. The Greenwich Meridian passes through Withernsea, a quiet seaside town just outside Hull, and whilst it doesn't announce itself with fanfare, that's rather the appeal. You won't find much in the way of dramatic monuments - this is more about the idea than the spectacle.

The meridian runs north-south through the town, marked on pavements and buildings if you know where to look. It's the zero point from which all longitude on the planet is measured, which means you're literally standing on the invisible line that divides east from west. Sounds daft, but it's oddly compelling once you're there.

This works best for geography enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys a good conversation starter. Kids might manage five minutes of wandering around trying to stand precisely on the line before getting restless. It's free, obviously, and you can do it in as long as you fancy - from a quick photo stop to a proper exploration of the town's seafront.

If you're staying at Little Otchan Glamping or Parkdean Resorts Withernsea Sands, you're practically on top of it. Sand le Mere, a couple of miles south, makes for a short detour. The real draw here isn't the meridian itself but combining it with Withernsea's other attractions - the pier and promenade are genuinely pleasant for a stroll. Go when the weather's decent; the coast can be bleak in winter.
