Greystone Plantation

Walking into Greystone Plantation near Richmond feels like slipping into something genuinely wild - tall conifers tower overhead, blocking out most of the sky, and the forest floor is thick with needles and moss. It's the kind of place where you can easily lose an hour without realising it, following trails that wind deeper into the trees. The plantation has that particular quiet you only get in managed woodland - peaceful rather than eerie, though the density of the conifers means it can feel quite enclosed.

It's best suited to walkers who don't need dramatic views or attractions at the end of the path. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes or so - there's not much in the way of features or clearings to break things up. But if you're after a proper forest walk with good air and time to think, this does the job. The trails are straightforward enough that you won't need a map, though going in winter when the light is already low might feel a touch gloomy.

There's no entrance fee and no set opening hours that we could pin down - it's simply there for you to walk through. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly rather than dash through. It pairs well with a stay at Hewn Yorkshire, just up the road, giving you a chance to stretch your legs without driving far. Richmond itself is close enough for lunch or supplies if needed.
