Griffin's Wood

Ancient beech trees tower overhead as you wander the well-maintained paths of this peaceful woodland just outside Chippenham. Griffin's Wood feels properly wild despite its accessibility, with a network of tracks that wind through dense canopy where dappled sunlight filters through the leaves.

Families will find it an easy ramble - the terrain is mostly flat with just gentle undulations, making it manageable for little legs. Dog walkers have clearly discovered this spot too, and you'll likely encounter a few four-legged friends along the way. The woodland is thick enough to feel secluded but not so dense that you'll worry about getting lost.

Bird watchers should bring binoculars. The mixed deciduous trees attract a decent variety of species, particularly in the early morning when the wood is at its most atmospheric. Spring brings bluebells carpeting the forest floor, though the display isn't quite as spectacular as some of Wiltshire's more famous bluebell woods.

Allow an hour for a leisurely circuit, perhaps two if you're stopping for a proper woodland picnic. It's the sort of place that works well as part of a day out from any of the nearby holiday parks around Chippenham - close enough for an easy morning walk before exploring the town's historic centre or heading further afield to places like Avebury.
