The smell hits you first when you walk into this place - salt, diesel, and something properly industrial that no amount of museum air-con can shift. The Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre takes you straight into the guts of what made this town matter, and it's a world away from the Cleethorpes beach crowds just a few miles up the road.

You're walking through actual trawler decks, seeing the nets and gear that fed Britain for generations. There's a restored steam trawler you can clamber around, which beats any static display - kids will tear through it like they're hunting for fish themselves. The archive sections feel lived-in rather than sterile, packed with photographs of weathered skippers and catches that would make your eyes water. It's the sort of museum where you genuinely understand why people risked their necks on the North Sea.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. It's not glitzy, and frankly it shouldn't be - Grimsby's fishing industry wasn't glitzy either. Plan a good couple of hours if you want to properly absorb it. Families with younger kids might find the technical bits dry, though the hands-on vessel exploration keeps them entertained.

If you're based at Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park, this is an excellent half-day break from the amusement arcades and deckchairs. It adds real substance to a coastal trip that might otherwise blur into every other English seaside visit. Worth the short drive.
