Grimsby Minster

The tower of Grimsby Minster rises over the town like something from a Victorian postcard - it's properly striking when you round the corner from the high street. This is a working parish church, not a cathedral despite the grand name, and it's been standing since medieval times though most of what you see is Victorian rebuild.

Inside, the space is generous and light. You'll find decent stained glass, some original medieval bits if you look closely, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere you only get in old churches on a weekday afternoon. The tower itself is the real draw - soaring and intricate, it dominates Grimsby's skyline and gives you a proper sense of scale when you step back outside.

History enthusiasts will spend a solid hour here. Families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in, unless they're genuinely into church architecture. It's free to wander in during open hours, though you'll want to check times beforehand as they vary.

If you're staying at Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park just down the coast, the Minster makes an easy morning visit on a rainy day or when you fancy something inland. It's not going to be the highlight of a seaside trip, but it's worth a detour if you're passing through Grimsby itself. The town has its own character - less twee than Cleethorpes but more genuine for it.
