Groveridge Wood

The walk into Groveridge Wood catches you off guard - one minute you're on the edge of Watlington, the next you're surrounded by proper ancient woodland that feels like it's been here forever. Beech and oak dominate, with the forest floor carpeted thick enough to muffle your footsteps. It's a working woodland rather than some manicured nature reserve, which means you get the real deal: fallen logs, tangled undergrowth, and patches where light breaks through in shafts.

This is walker territory, frankly. The paths are good but uneven - bring proper boots if you've had rain. You can lose an hour here easily, or make it a quick forty-minute loop depending on what's open. Families with young kids might find it a bit muddy and relentless after the first twenty minutes; there's not much in the way of viewpoints or facilities to break things up. But if you're into woodland ecology or just want genuine green space without the crowds, it delivers.

Access seems to be free and informal - it's the kind of place that doesn't have a visitor centre or gift shop, which is precisely why it's worth the detour. Coming from Cholsey Grange CL, it's barely six miles away, making it an ideal half-day venture during a caravan holiday in the area. Go early morning when the wood is quiet and the light's best. Autumn is cracking - fungi everywhere and the leaf litter becomes part of the appeal.
