Gualann Sheileach

The walk up Gualann Sheileach from Pitlochry is straightforward enough, but the hill itself doesn't exactly announce itself as a must-do. At 658 metres, it's a proper hill rather than a mountain - the sort of thing you'd bag on a lazy afternoon if you're staying in the area. The ascent takes about ninety minutes from the town, climbing through woodland before breaking out onto open moorland with decent views across Perthshire toward Schiehallion and beyond.

It works best for walkers who aren't after anything dramatic. Families with decent legs will manage it; the path is never technical, though it does get boggy in places depending on the weather. There's no dramatic summit cairn or shelter, just the kind of windswept top where you'll stand for five minutes, take a photo, and crack on. The real draw is the walk itself - moorland and forest mixing, nothing too strenuous, nothing too dull.

Since it sits within striking distance of Pitlochry, it slots neatly into a week based at Tighnavon Glamping Pods or Kilvrecht Campsite. Both are close enough that you could tackle this in the morning and spend the afternoon exploring the town's shops and cafes, or visiting one of the nearby visitor attractions. Allow three hours for the round trip including a rest at the top. There's no entrance fee or booking required - it's mountain access as it should be.
