The town itself pulses with energy during summer months. Theatre lovers flock to the renowned Festival Theatre, while walkers gear up for ascents of nearby Schiehallion - that perfect pyramid-shaped peak that's visible for miles around. Don't fancy the full mountain slog? The gentler slopes of Craig Chean offer cracking views without the commitment.

Golf enthusiasts have proper choice here. Mains of Taymouth Golf Course provides a decent round with mountain backdrops, while the more exclusive Taymouth Castle Golf Course lets you play in the shadow of a genuine Scottish castle.

Archaeology buffs will find themselves spoilt. The mysterious Carse Farm Stone Circle sits quietly in nearby fields, while ancient hill forts dot the landscape - remnants of Iron Age communities who clearly knew a good defensive position when they saw one.

Getting here couldn't be easier. The A9 sweeps you straight up from Perth in under an hour, while the scenic route via Aberfeldy adds another half hour but rewards with proper Highland scenery. The nearest rail station sits right in town centre.
