Guilden Down Hill

Standing at 421 metres, this unassuming summit gives you proper views across the Welsh borders without the crowds you'll find on the Shropshire Hills' more famous peaks. The walk up from Craven Arms takes about an hour through farmland and forestry tracks - nothing too taxing, though it's steep enough in places to get your heart rate up.

Walkers who fancy a bit of solitude will love this one. You're unlikely to bump into tour groups or Instagram hordes here, just the odd dog walker and perhaps a farmer checking on sheep. The views stretch east towards the Clee Hills and west into deepest Powys - on a clear day you can pick out the outline of the Brecon Beacons.

Families with older kids (say 10 plus) will manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might struggle with the rougher sections near the top. Allow half a day if you're making it a proper expedition with a picnic at the summit.

With glamping spots like Wild Valley and Offa's Pitch within a few miles, it makes for a cracking morning walk before checking in. The hill pairs well with exploring Bishop's Castle or tackling Offa's Dyke if you're staying at one of the nearby sites around Craven Arms.
