Rock Hill

Rock Hill rises sharp and sudden above the Shropshire landscape, a proper little peak that commands attention from miles around. It's one of those walks where the climb feels steeper than it looks from the car park, but the payoff is worth the huffing - on a clear day you're looking across the Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, and if you're lucky, the Welsh hills bleeding into the distance.

The summit itself is surprisingly modest: a trig point, some gorse, a handful of rocks that explain the name. You're not talking about some dramatic crag here. What matters is the walk up and the views from the top. Most people allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photographs or just standing about absorbing it. The path from Craven Arms is well-enough trodden that you won't get lost, though proper boots are worth the bother in wet weather.

Walkers and fell runners get the most from this. Kids will enjoy it if they're the type who like scrambling and bagging summits, but it's not a dramatic enough destination to hold the attention of younger ones for long. History types might appreciate that you're standing on ground saturated with Civil War action, though there's nothing to see that tells the story.

Staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Black Hall Lodges is closest at two and a half miles - makes this an easy morning outing before tackling something bigger. It's the sort of walk that reminds you why Shropshire's worth the detour: proper hill country without needing ice axes or a weekend of your life.
