Gwernaffel Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction, Gwernaffel Wood sits just outside Presteigne and delivers exactly what you'd want from a forest ramble through mid-Wales. The woodland is mixed - oak and beech mostly - with decent paths that wind through the trees and open onto some decent views across the surrounding countryside. There's a real sense of being away from things here, which matters when you're staying in this part of Powys.

Walkers will get the most from it. This isn't a quick twenty-minute stroll; you're looking at a couple of hours minimum if you want to properly explore the place. Families with young children might find the paths a bit uneven in places, and there's not much in the way of facilities, so bring water and snacks. The wood is free to access and open year-round, though autumn is genuinely special here - the colour change makes it worth timing a visit around September or October.

It pairs well with a stay at one of the nearby parks. Rockbridge Park and Black Hall Lodges are both close by and well-reviewed, so you could base yourself there and use Gwernaffel as one of several walks in the area. Hush Hush Glamping, slightly further out, gives you the option of exploring more widely across Radnorshire.

Truthfully, it's not dramatic. You won't find dramatic here. But it's genuine woodland on your doorstep, and that counts for something when you're after a proper break.
