Gwydyr Park

The Gwydyr Forest sprawls across steep hillsides above Betws-y-Coed, and Gwydyr Park sits within this vast woodland - a proper forest experience rather than a manicured nature reserve. You're walking among tall conifers and broadleaves, following marked trails that wind through valleys and up ridgelines, with the River Conwy threading through below. The main draw is the woodland itself - peaceful, atmospheric, and genuinely wild in places. Walkers absolutely love it here. Kids will manage it fine on the easier lower trails, though the steeper sections demand decent boots and a bit of fitness. The forest floor is often wet, even days after rain, so come prepared. Allow two to three hours for a solid loop, though you could spend half a day exploring if you're keen. There's no formal visitor centre that we could pin down, but the area is open access and free - just park sensibly at the recognised spots near Betws-y-Coed. Spring and autumn are cracking times to visit when the light filters through properly and midges aren't a nightmare. If you're based at Conwy Valley Touring Park, just 2.9 miles away, this is an essential walk. The forest isn't flashy or Instagram-ready, but it delivers genuine mountain woodland on your doorstep - the sort of place where you remember why you came to North Wales in the first place.
